for urban sustainability.

Project goals:

  1. Quantify the consumption of resources and production of waste for an average urban household

  2. Test technologies + lifestyles to reduce both

  3. Share results and crowdsource ideas

The Living Experiment is an off-grid, prototype living area. We use it to quantify the environmental and financial cost of everyday urban life, and prototype resource efficient improvements that result in minimal change to lifestyle.

We built the lab from the ground up so we can modify and measure all elements of a typical modern lifestyle. Testing to date includes -

solar power generation, household power storage using recycled Tesla batteries, power consumption and water usage tracking, passive heated rainwater collection, hydroponic indoor food production, effect of diet on power consumption, waste containment, living area layout, and acoustic design.

Our motto is ‘fail fast, fail early’, and we implement solutions long before they are ready. We use recycled goods and standard construction materials wherever possible.
